Set up taxes

Taxes are named rates attached to products. A product is taxed by exactly the rates attached to it — a product with no tax rate attached is not taxed.

Create a tax rate

  1. Open Products → Tax rates (or Settings → Taxes & fees) and choose New tax rate.
  2. Enter a Name ("Sales tax"), the Rate (%) and, optionally, a Jurisdiction.
  3. Choose whether it is Included in product price or Added at checkout.

Rates can have up to three decimal places, such as 8.875%.

Attach rates to products

Open a product and pick its rates under Tax Rates. A product can carry more than one — a cocktail might carry sales tax and a liquor tax — and each shows as its own line on the receipt.

Because products point at the rate, changing a rate updates every product that uses it. Orders that were already placed keep the rate they were charged.

Deleting a rate removes it from every product that used it, so those products stop collecting that tax.

Fees

Settings → Taxes & fees is also where you add a Convenience fee and choose whether to pass the platform and processing fees on to customers. See Connect Stripe.
